Where it differs is while both versions are fond of punshing the wicked and protecting yugi, the Manga Atem… was horrifying, and the punishments he dolled out are Freddy Kruger style horrifying twists on his victims personalities, with a Jigsaw style obession for justice. Said puzzle then would go on to frequently posses Yugi as it contained the spirit of an ancient gamemaster Pharoah. It was a similar story to the anime, with the anime even using the early backstory but streamlining it: Yugi Muto was an often bullied kid with only one friend, his crush Anzu/Tea, who solved a centuries old puzzle his grandpa had gave him. And while said mag gave me a lifelong love of One Piece and Shaman King, it also opened me up to the original manga for Yu-Gi-Oh! which was finally being translated.Īnd it was there I found out the anime actually starts about 2/3 of the way through the series… and that the first third was a mixture of horrifying and batshit in the best ways possible. So while I sadly never got to see the final season, I plan to rewatch the series at some point, I moved on to GX, even getting some cards for christmas and i’ts cool heroes, and while I did I got another dose as I started reading the US edition of Shonen Jump. It helped I really enjoyed the card game playing with my friends then playing matches against myself something I still do. While the tape help Yu-Gi-Oh was destined to be a hit with me: It had tournametns, always a thing for me, fun strategy and a cool setting of duelist kingdom meaning it’s card games could be held in deep forests, beaches, and with some weird clown impersonating a teen. That’s not a joke as at the time here in the US, 4Kids or Konami or someone sent out promo vhses to hype up the series, card game and video games all incoming. This loss hit me hard as Yu-Gi-Oh! has been an important part of my life, starting when a young me got a VHS in the mail inviting me to duelist kingdom. ![]() In the early hours of the morning of July 7th I got some truly dreadful news: Kazuki Takahshi, author of the Yu-Gi-Oh! Manga, was found dead having apparently been snorkeling, but not much else is known, onlyt hat he was clearly dead for some time. In Loving Memory of Kazuki Takahashi: 1961-2022
